Aetherplane is a fictional setting that started out as the brainchild of Amythyst. It has been a long journey.
History
Initially, Aetherplane began as as a custom campaign setting for Dungeons & Dragons, developed while Amy was in high school (during the early 1990s). Over time, it was very slowly developed and refined, as she had time. Eventually, having filled multiple 3-ring binders and part of her hard drive with material, it was decided that the best way to make sure the content was consistent and could be accessed in one place was to put it into a wiki.
At first, Amy tried out WorldAnvil, but found the user interface for editing articles to be clunky and not user-friendly, so she began looking for alternatives.
She already had experience editing and creating content for a variety of Wikia/Fandom wikis. Additionally, she already had a web server for her software development business, Cat Bot Digital. It seemed that a move to a traditional wiki was the only logical solution. So after doing a little bit of research, Amy settled on the MediaWiki software. In September of 2022, she created a subdomain for the wiki, installed the software, and started customizing the new Aetherplane Wiki. This wiki now serves as the repository for all information involving the Aetherplane setting, as Amy continues to work on it and brings others on board to lend their own creativity to the project.
Purpose
The Aetherplane fictional universe, from its very roots and throughout all of its modifications, has always been a darker take on the typical high fantasy setting. Amy's intent was for it to serve as a springboard for running roleplaying games, story crafting and writing, a setting for digital games, and all other artistic endeavors. She wanted it to be an inspiration, not only for her own purposes, but anyone else who wanted to use it or even contribute to it.
That is why choosing a Creative Commons license for it, when she began publishing it online, was a no-brainer. It was important to her that people would be able to use the Aetherplane setting freely, add to it and modify it as needed for their projects, give attribution to her for her initial world building work that she did, and not have to worry about losing the copyright to the content that they created.
See the Aetherplane Wiki Copyrights page for more details about the licenses used on this wiki and how you can use the content for your own projects.
